A Decaying Winter build is the combination of your perk, your traits, and the one auxiliary equipment you carry. The game documents 20 perks and ̃16 traits, and the right pairing decides whether you thrive or get deleted. This page walks through the roles and the combinations the guides actually recommend.
The four perk roles
Perks split into Frontline, Backline, Support, and Basic. Frontliners (Vagabond, Executioner, Berserker, Arbiter, Immolator, Drifter) fight in melee; Backliners (Artillerist, Riskrunner) use guns, traps, and explosives; Support (Mindflayer, Lazarus) help without direct damage; Basic (Damned, Survivalist) have no ability but no downside either.
Traits that cover your cons
Traits add pros — some with cons marked — and you should pick one that cancels your perk's downside or stacks with its upside. The guide suggests at least one defensive trait (Dependable or Fearless) for most builds, while Impatient helps looters move faster.
Auxiliary equipment choices
You bring one gear per run, used with C and refreshed each night. Frontliners like Ballistic Dagger or Holo Emitter; Executioner benefits from Throwing Knives for free scrap. The Emergency Respirator is your starter and grants storm immunity for about 15 seconds.
Recommended starter builds
New players should lean Survivalist or a defensive Frontliner with Dependable. Solo players want perks that self-sustain, while teams divide jobs by role so frontliners defend early nights and backliners gather firepower. Match the build to your squad, not just to raw stats.
